Geocache Description:

Welcome to the 2019 Edition of Cache Across Maryland, hosted by the Maryland Geocaching Society. This is one of ten geocaches placed throughout the "Old Line State" in locations chosen to showcase Maryland's diverse beauty, history and terrain.  From the mountains of Western Maryland to the Atlantic Ocean, Cache Across Maryland 2019 will again demonstrate that Maryland truly is “America in Miniature”.

Each of the ten geocaches contains a code which you will use to determine the location of the CAM 2019 Picnic to be held on May 4th, 2019. The code can be found on the inside of the cache container and on the inside front cover of the logbook. Don't forget to record this code! Any geocacher who has completed all TEN of the CAM geocaches and attends the CAM Picnic on May 4th will receive a Certificate of Completion and a Cache Across Maryland 2019 commemorative geocoin in antique copper. We hope you enjoy CAM 2019!

Fort Smallwood Park

Battery HartshorneFort Smallwood Park is located on the outer Patapsco River as it meets the Chesapeake Bay.  Fort Smallwood was an Endicott Period coastal fort.  The Federal government purchased the land in 1896, battery construction began in 1899, and the first battery was completed in 1900.  Similar nearby forts from the same era include Fort Howard (on North Point in southeastern Baltimore County) and Fort Armistead (at Hawkins Point on the Baltimore City-Anne Arundel County line).  This fort was named for Revolutionary War Maj. Gen. William Smallwood (1732-1792), a commander of the "Maryland Line" Regiment in the Continental Army who later became fourth governor of Maryland (1785-1788).  The fort originally consisted of two batteries:  Battery Hartshorne, which was armed with two 6" guns on disappering carriages; and Battery Sykes, which was armed with two 3" pedestal-mounted guns.  Only Battery Hartshorne still stands today.

The fort was in use until 1928, at which time it became a Baltimore City Park.  On April 1, 2006, it was transferred to Anne Arundel County's Department of Recreation and Parks.  Fort Smallwood Park's recreational amenities include a 380-foot fishing pier, children's playground, historic gun battery and barracks, walking trails, beaches, pond, and volleyball courts.  The fishing pier was dedicated on September 19, 2009, and named for Bill Burton, a long-time Baltimore Sun outdoorsman/reporter and columnist.

The Geocache

This geocache is NOT located at the listed coordinates.  This is a field puzzle.

The posted coordinates will bring you to a small memorial grove dedicated to Anne Arundel County residents who gave their lives in defense of their country in Iraq and Afghanistan.

As you face the grove from the road, look for a bench on your left. Attached to the bench is a plaque with a date (M/DD/YY).

To find the location of the cache, start with the posted coordinates, and project a waypoint of (M*167) feet at (DD+(YY*3))*3 degrees true.

As with any outdoor activity, geocaching has potential risks.  It is your responsibility to determine those risks and make your own choices in pursuing a geocache.  If at any time you are injured or need emergency assistance, dial 911.

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.
