Geocache Description:

An old (but not so old) play field for a very common game in Italy before the WWII: Pallone con bracciale.

The posted coordinates bring you to the old Sphaeristerium of Pisa.

In this place in the early '900 a large amount of people collected weekly to watch live the matches of what, in a couple of years, had become one of the most popular sports in Pisa.

When the football season ended and the Garibaldi Arena closed its doors by saying goodbye to the athletes and giving them the appointment to the next championship, the crowd of passionate about sports people poured into the Sphaeristerium, where the games of the "bracciale" took place. Like football matches, the meetings of this discipline had become over time a ritual that many Pisans could not live without during the long summer afternoons: many followed the deeds of award-winning champions betting even large sums for the time .

Until the first half of the 20th century this game was one of the most popular and followed in Italy: it was a variation of tennis, in which the players hit a ball with a very heavy bracelet. The two opposing teams consisted of three players each: batsman, fullback and shoulder. The professional "pallonisti" - so called the "bracelet" players - were paid generously, as much as to be the sportsmen with the highest compensation behind the Spanish bullfighters and Japanese sumo wrestlers.

Hence, the ancient medieval walls, became the lines of the playing fields, and the three parts of the Sphaeristerium where divided by three signs on the wall, like the one in the picture below.

If you move along the wall towards the gas station, you can spot the other two signs, covered by grass and metal nets..

Enjoy this recovered green area along the walls, and this old sports tradition
