Geocache Description:

Near the posted coordinates once stood an outhouse which contained a rare man-operated treadmill mentioned in a Deed of 1692 as the ‘Great Wheeled Well’. This was used to raise water, in a tapered bucket, containing about 5 gallons, from a depth of some 350 feet, which would have taken about 10 minutes to hoist.

You will not find the cache at the posted coordinates, however you will find a commemorative village sign featuring the iconic ‘Great Wheel’ as a motif, which was erected in 1989 from funds raised by the ‘All Saints Friendship Group’ at a Village Festival in 1988. It is now in the ownership of Horndean Parish Council. A time capsule from 1989 lies buried at its foot.

The original wheel is now restored and features in the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum at Singleton near Chichester.

The Cache:

Attatched to the village sign you will find a small plaque. On the plaque you will find a date. Label the date AB/CD/EFGH. The cache can then be found at:

N50 55.(D/A)(G-E)C

W001 00.(B+E)(F-A)(H-B+A+E)

The checksum for all 15 digits = 47

If anybody would like to expand the Village Sign Series, please do. I would ask that you let Smokeypugs know first at www.villagesignseries.co.uk so they can keep track of the Village Sign numbers and names to avoid duplication.
