Beachcombing and Birdboxing on Hamble Common

 09:30 – 11:00

Wednesday 13th February 2019

We must have done well last time because we've been invited back by the Hamble Conservation Volunteers to join them for a beach clean on Hamble Common. This CITO is a beach clean, although there's also some opportunity to observe and possibly assist in some bird boxing.

Phillip Rawlinson from HCV explains, "In February we have a small team of bird enthusiasts in our group who have been monitoring the bird life on Hamble Common.

On this particular day eight of us in two teams each with a long ladder will find the boxes and clean them out of previous roosting and note the contents to identify the inhabitant. We sometimes repair or replace the bird box, this year we plan to move a few to more desirable locations.
We keep records of our finds and up to now we average 50 boxes with about 60% success, which is encouraging.

We have no objections to additional volunteers however they would be observers rather than participating in the survey."

Please indicate your ‘will attend’ and arrive at least five minutes early for registration on our own log sheet. We will then be given instructions and a Health & Safety brief by Phillip from HCV before the exercise begins.

Parking: There is free parking at the Hamble Point car park meet spot itself and more on street parking nearby. Please allow for travel time and arrive five minutes early for CITO registration.

Where: Meet in the car park at Hamble Point on School Lane, Hamble (as per given CITO coordinates) or find us on the beach!

What: Join us collecting litter from the beach at Hamble Common. It is an unfortunate fact of life that not everyone respects our environment, even those who use the Common and its beaches on a regular basis, so there is a continuing need to sweep the beaches for litter.  Most of the litter is unsightly but a significant proportion is hazardous to wild life, domestic animals and us. The current record for a day is 28 bags of rubbish achieved by a solid turnout of regular volunteers.

How: Phillip from Hamble Conservation Volunteers will be there providing guidance and tools. Please wear warm clothing, sensible footwear and your own gloves if you prefer. Equipment such as bin bags and litter pickers will be provided. If you want to buy gloves at the event, they are 50p. The event will proceed in any weather unless there are high winds or storms. There will be appropriate tasks for almost any ability level.

Health and Safety: All health and safety rules apply. Children will need supervision and pets kept under control.
