The Fredericton Region Museum, formerly known as the York Sunbury Museum, is a small, non-profit museum founded in 1932 by the York Sunbury Historical Society. The museum was housed in several different locations until 1959, when it moved into Officers’ Square on Queen Street in Fredericton, New Brunswick. This year marks the 60th Anniversary in Officers’ Square. Each cache features an exhibit or historical figure. Find five caches to receive a limited edition Geocoin while quantities last.
The first French settlement in the Fredericton area was established in the 1680s and colonized by the Damours who also established Fort Nashwaak, Acadia’s temporary administrative capital during times of war. After Acadia was ceded to the British in 1713, new Acadian settlements along the Saint John River appeared, including Pointe-Sainte-Anne. The Acadians of Pointe-Sainte-Anne were dispersed, many of them killed, and their homesteads burned by New England Rangers in February of 1759, as part of the Deportation of the Acadians of the Maritime region. written by Stephanie Pettigrew
