SideTracked - Gloucester Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Mzebonga: After a spate of confirmed disappearances (October 2021, April 2022, and August 2022), I think it's probably time to admit defeat with this latest incarnation of Gloucester Sidetracked. It's getting a bit costly to keep throwing nanos at the problem!

Thanks to everyone who found it over the last few years. Hopefully a replacement Sidetracked will return to the city soon.

Geocache Description:

The fourth iteration of a Sidetracked hide at Gloucester station - close enough that you should be able to make a swift grab while changing trains (if you can get through the barriers). The latest version takes advantage to the new entrance/exit on Platform 4. If arriving or leaving via train, this is your best means of access.

The cache is hidden in an area where there are a lot of pedestrians passing by on a regular basis. Please use some stealth while searching. The hint has been made specific so as to reduce any "suspicious" lingering and make sure you don't miss your train!

About Gloucester Station

Gloucester Station (Photo by Roy Hughes)

Gloucester station was originally opened in November 1840 by the Birmingham and Gloucester Railway company. Across the following 15 years, three other railway companies would open stations in the city, all running services.

Following the railway reorganisation of the mid-1960s operations to other stations were reduced before finally being concentrated into the refurbished "Gloucester Central" station in 1977.

As part of the 1977 refurbishment, Gloucester boasted the second longest railway platform in Great Britain at 1,977 feet and 4 inches; long enough to take two Inter City 125 services.

It remains unpopular with mainline operators as services operating from London towards the North of the country have historically had to reverse out of Gloucester in order to reach Cheltenham - meaning that the engine driver has to walk to the other end of the train! Since 1847 the Cheltenham Loop or Gloucester Avoiding Line has existed to avoid trains having to change direction during operation, thereby excluding Gloucester from many services and creating Gloucester's famed "Railway Triangle".
