Geocache Description:

TEATRO BAQUET

The Baquet Theater, located on Rua de Santo António (now 31st January), precisely where the BPI building is now located, had been commissioned by António Pereira, a Portuguese tailor who, very young, had emigrated to Spain. When he returned from the neighboring country, he brought a considerable amount of money - which allowed him to launch himself into the construction of a theater -, a woman, and an enigmatic surname of French origin, precisely "Baquet". The construction works of the theater proceeded with considerable speed . Initiated on February 21, 1858, they were completed less than a year later, and the theater was inaugurated with a Carnival ball on February 13, 1859.

On the night of March 20 to 21, 1888, when the comic opera "The Dragons of Villars" was performed, with a sold out of about six hundred spectators, a violent fire broke out behind the scenes and in less than five minutes the Fire destroyed the theater altogether. In that short space of time, the panicked spectators rushed to the exits, and at first it was thought that there had been no casualties.

Unfortunately, according to official statistics, 88 people died in that tragedy, but in reality, 120 people died.
