L'église Notre-Dame-des-Eaux

Selon la tradition locale, un pâtre aurait découvert une statue en bois de la Vierge dans le tronc d’un saule au bord de la Choisille, en 1032. En gardant son troupeau de vaches dans les prés bordant la rivière, le berger fut intrigué par une de ses bêtes qui léchait souvent le même saule. Il trouva alors une tête féminine, grossièrement sculptée au couteau dans un bois de couleur brune. La statue fut appelée aussitôt Notre-Dame-des-Eaux. Il s’agissait probablement d’une divinité païenne, en relation avec le culte des eaux.
Le seigneur propriétaire de la prairie fit édifier une chapelle en son honneur, qu’il confia aux moines de Marmoutier. La tête sculptée fut remplacée au XVe siècle par une nouvelle statue de Vierge en bois, toujours exposée sur un autel dans l’église actuelle. La chapelle fut détruite en 1847.
L’église actuelle fut construite à partir de 1847 symboliquement sur la rive de la Choisille, dans un style néo-gothique. Elle fut bénie en février 1856, puis érigée en église paroissiale en février 1859. L’église possède plusieurs vitraux réalisés en 1876 et 1877, œuvres de l’atelier Lobin de Tours. Le clocher quant à lui fut bâti un peu plus tard, en 1888 par l’architecte Abel Jousset.
According to local tradition, a shepherd would have discovered a wooden statue of the Virgin in the trunk of a willow at the edge of the Choisille, in 1032. Keeping his herd of cows in the meadows bordering the river, the shepherd was intrigued by one of his beasts that often licked the same willow. He found a female head, roughly carved with a knife in a brown wood. The statue was immediately called Notre-Dame-des-Eaux. It was probably a pagan deity, in connection with the water cult.
The lord owner of the meadow built a chapel in his honor, which he entrusted to the monks of Marmoutier. The carved head was replaced in the 15th century by a new statue of the Virgin in wood, still on an altar in the present church. The chapel was destroyed in 1847.
The current church was built from 1847 symbolically on the banks of the Choisille, in a neo-Gothic style. It was blessed in February 1856, then erected as a parish church in February 1859. The church has several stained glass windows made in 1876 and 1877, works of Atelier Lobin in Tours. The bell tower was built a little later, in 1888 by the architect Abel Jousset.
