Igreja Matriz de Pedrogão Pequeno Traditional Geocache

A Rede das Aldeias do Xisto é um projeto de desenvolvimento sustentável, de âmbito regional, liderado pela ADXTUR- Agência para o Desenvolvimento Turístico das Aldeias do Xisto, em parceria com 21 Municípios da Região Centro e com cerca de 100 operadores privados que atuam no território.

Estado presentes em quatro Unidades de Paisagem (Serra da Lousã, Serra do Açor, Zêzere e Tejo-Ocreza), as Aldeias do Xisto representam um belíssimo património cultural e natural. Com vastas possibilidades que vão desde a gastronomia à etnografia, das ruralidades e da ligação à natureza e à floresta, as Aldeias do Xisto têm enorme potencial turístico e não só.

O projeto Geocaching Aldeias do Xisto propõe aumentar a oferta de pontos de interesse associados a esta prática da caça ao tesouro do sec. XXI. Pretende dotar cada aldeia com pelo menos duas caches e integrar algumas já existentes em circuitos e percursos pedestres.

The Schist Villages area is a region of Portugal’s interior that has successfully been promoted to tourists. The brand is managed by the ADXTUR association, the Agency for the Touristic Development of the Schist Villages, and brings together 21 Municipalities of the central region of Portugal, and more than 100 private local operations, which all share the common strategy of promoting and revitalising an area where schist stone dominates the landscape.

Present in four Landscape Units (Serra da Lousã, Serra do Açor, Zêzere and Tejo-Ocreza), the Schist Villages represent a beautiful cultural and natural heritage. With vast possibilities ranging from gastronomy to ethnography, rurality and the connection to nature and to the forest, the Schist Villages have enormous touristic potential, among others.

The Geocaching Schist Villages Project proposes to increase the offer of points of interest associated with this practice treasure hunting of the XXI century. It intends to equip each village with at least two caches and integrate some already existent in circuits and pedestrian routes.

A igreja matriz de Pedrógão Pequeno, com orago de São João Baptista, terá sido edificada em meados do século XVI. No ano de 1551 os registos da Confraria do Santíssimo Sacramento documentavam a existência desta igreja, pertencente à Ordem de Malta. No ano de 1587 a igreja estaria concluída, segundo atesta a data inscrita no arco triunfal.

O interior do templo é dividido em três naves separadas por quatro arcos torais de volta perfeita assentes em colunas toscanas, sendo a central mais alta. Ao fundo, coro-alto em madeira assente sobre dois pilares em cantaria. Possui quatro altares laterais com retábulos em talha dourada. Do lado do Evangelho, um arco pleno com figuração do Baptismo em relevo na pedra de fecho abre para a capela baptismal, inserida no primeiro registo da torre sineira, e púlpito de cantaria junto ao arco triunfal, com balcão cilíndrico apoiado em coluna. A cobertura do templo é em madeira com caixotões lisos; na nave central cinco caixotões estão pintados com cenas da vida de São João Baptista. O arco triunfal, de volta perfeita, possui a data "1587" gravada, abrindo para a capela-mor, coberta com abóbada de berço com caixotões revestidos a estuque, possuindo retábulo de talha dourada e cadeiral de madeira.

The main church of Pedrógão Pequeno, which patron in St. John the Baptist, was built in the middle of the 16th century. In the year 1551, the records of the Confraternity of the Holy Sacrament documented the existence of this church, belonging to the Order of Malta. In the year 1587, the construction of the church would be completed, according to the date inscribed on the triumphal arch.

The interior is divided into three naves separated by four round arches set in Tuscan columns, being the central one, the highest. At the bottom, wooden high-choir set on two stone pillars. It has four lateral altars with retables in gilded carving. On the side of the Gospel, a round arch with a figure of The Baptism in relief in the closing stone opens to the baptismal chapel, inserted in the first register of the bell tower, and a stonework pulpit next to the triumphal arch, with a cylindrical balcony supported in a column. The ceiling is in wood without adornments; in the central nave, paintings with scenes from the life of St. John the Baptist. The round triumphal arch has the date "1587" engraved, opening to the main chapel, covered with a vaulted crib with a stucco-clad ceiling, a gilded wooden altarpiece and wooden choir-stall.
