Geocache Description:

A church in my hometown which i spent a fair bit of my youth visiting either for organised activities

The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.

The church has an ancient foundation, preceding the Norman conquest, and a church on the site is recorded in the Domesday Book.[3] This church was replaced in 1766 by a Georgian chapel. This was replaced in turn by the present church that was built between 1869 and 1871.[4] It was designed by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin. The initial estimate was for £10,000, but the cost rose to £12,000 (equivalent to £1,030,000 in 2016),[5] and was paid for by the 4th Earl of Sefton. It provided seating for 650 people. The stone used for its construction was taken from the Earl's own quarries.
