This geocache is placed just outside the memorial a small nano on the bottom of the lamp post.

Cecil Hurley

Cecil was born in 1896 In Mansfield Crescent, Donisthorpe.  He lived with his parents at 'Fernleigh Cottage'.  

Cecil enlisted at Ashby in late - August 1914 into the 5th (1/5th) Leicestershire Battalion.

Although little is known of his early life, on the 1911 cencus he is known to be a colliery pony driver.  In early Spring 1915 he voluntereed for Lieutenant Aubrey Moore's counter-tunnelling section.

From 1916 onwards Cecil reverted to the role of an infantryman, and Sadly Corporal Cecil Hurley 240645 was killed in action in the Battle of Pontruet on the 24th September 1918 aged just 21.  He lays to rest in Bellingcourt British Cemetery in France.

His pictures are created for the exhibition.

 

First 50 Heroes

The Coalville Heroes Series celebrates the first fifty volunteers from our area to take part in the Great War of 1914-18. Each geocache commemorates a real volunteer and describes his activities during the Great War.

This cache was placed by Moira Crackers with kind permission of the landowner.
