Over deze locatie
Hier sta je op een brug in Amsterdam Noord, als je naar het zuid-oosten kijkt zie je een van de overgebleven lichtschepen.
Een lichtschip is een op een vaste positie op zee verankerd schip. Het schip staat op zeekaarten aangegeven en moet daarom nauwkeurig op zijn voorgeschreven positie blijven liggen. De schepen zijn veelal felrood gekleurd. Op de zijden van de romp staat de naam op een wit vlak met grote zwarte letters of direct op de rode romp met grote witte letters. De naam van het schip wordt meestal ontleend aan de ondiepte waarbij het schip ligt. Een lichtschip is uitgerust met een lichttoren met sterke lichtinstallatie. De lichtsignalen die een lichtschip afgeeft zijn vergelijkbaar met die van een vuurtoren, ze hebben een eigen patroon waaraan ze herkend kunnen worden. Verder zijn er vaak misthoorns en een radiobaken. Omdat het schip voor lange tijd op een specifieke plaats ligt, is er meestal geen motor voor de voortstuwing. Voor de verplaatsing van het lichtschip worden sleepboten ingezet. Vaak zijn er wel kleine motoren aan boord voor de opwekking van elektriciteit. Meerdere motoren zorgen voor reserve voor het geval een motor defect raakt. Lichtschepen kunnen zowel bemand als onbemand zijn. Tot aan de jaren 80 van de twintigste eeuw waren lichtschepen bemand. De taak van de bemanning was vooral het onderhoud aan het schip en de lichtinstallatie. Neventaken die soms ook werden verricht waren, onder andere, wind - en stormwaarschuwingen, meteorologische waarnemingen en controle op vervuiling van het water. De bemanning bleef vaak weken aaneen aan boord en werd door boten af- en aangevoerd. Aan boord waren natuurlijk hutten voor de bemanning en opslagruimten voor water, voedsel en brandstof. In de jaren 80 werden de lichtschepen allemaal geautomatiseerd, enerzijds uit bezuinigingsoverwegingen, anderzijds omdat computers het werk in combinatie met gps over konden nemen. Het lichtschip bij Goeree werd in 1971 vervangen door een geautomatiseerd lichtplatform.

A lightship is a ship anchored at a fixed position at sea. The ship is marked on sea charts and must therefore remain in its prescribed position. The ships are often bright red colored. On the sides of the hull the name is on a white surface with large black letters or directly on the red trunk with large white letters. The name of the ship is usually derived from the shallowness of the ship. A lightship is equipped with a light tower with strong light installation. The light signals emitted by a lightship are comparable to those of a lighthouse, they have their own pattern to which they can be recognized. Furthermore, there are often fog horns and a radio beacon. Because the ship is at a specific location for a long time, there is usually no engine for propulsion. Tugs are used for the movement of the lightship. Often there are small engines on board for the generation of electricity. Several engines provide a reserve in case an engine fails. Light ships can be both manned and unmanned. Light ships were manned until the 80s of the twentieth century. The task of the crew was mainly the maintenance of the ship and the lighting installation. Emergency tasks that were sometimes carried out included wind and storm warnings, meteorological observations and monitoring of water pollution. The crew often stayed on board for weeks on end and was transported by boats. On board were of course cabins for the crew and storage rooms for water, food and fuel. In the 1980s, the lightships were all automated, on the one hand from austerity considerations, on the other hand because computers could take over the work in combination with GPS. The lightship at Goeree was replaced in 1971 by an automated light platform.
