Church Micro 12192...Isleworth - St Francis
Until the 1920s, this area consisted of orchards and market gardens, as can be seen on the map below. The nearby railway did not have a station until 1931 and it was this and the construction of the Great West Road that led to the development of local housing estates. This church was built from 1933 to provide a place of worship for the new residents.
The church is now a Grade II listed building for its special architectural or historic interest. It is described as "This powerful composition shows the richness of Gothic design in the 1930s, of which (Ernest C.) Shearman was one of the best exponents of creating monumental spaces out of simple materials."
It is built from Claygate stock brick with contrasting stone bands externally, and Fletton brick internally. Unusually the liturgical east is in fact north. Highlights of the building include a spectacular rose window and a 15ft high Rood Cross.
Unfortunately due to the limitations of the location the cache is rather less spectacular, and you'll have to pick your retrieval moment carefully as the A4 road is rarely quiet.
