Geocache Description:

When I walk through a cemetery I enjoy looking at all the old tombstones, some with dates that are no longer visible, thinking of what it may have been like in their times.  How difficult life could be.  There was no such thing as an eight hour work week.  You worked until the job was done.  Times certainly are different than that in the 1850's, and I know I would not have liked to have lived during that time.  As a matter of fact, I wouldn't trade places with anyone here.

One of the monuments I saw when visiting this peaceful place was that of Nathaniel Cobb Deering.  Deering was born in Denmark, Oxford County, Maine. Here is some interesting information on him.

Deering was a US Congressman. After completing his education he became a farmer and was involved in local businesses including a sawmill. He served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1855 to 1856. In 1857 he moved to Osage, Iowa, where he resumed his interests in the lumber business. He served as a Clerk in the United States Senate until resigning in 1865. From 1865 to 1869 Deering was a Special Agent of the Post Office Department for Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska. He was Iowa's National Bank Examiner from 1872 to 1877. In 1876 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Republican and served three terms, 1877 to 1883. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1882 and returned to farming in Osage. Deering later became interested in cattle ranching, and was President of a Montana cattle company at the time of his death.

The cache is in the cemetery but not near any of the grave markers. That being said, if there should be a burial service going on when you get to this spot it may be best if you come back some other time. As with all cemetery caches be respectful and no night caching.
