   Il se présente soit sous la forme de grands cristaux incolores, colorés ou fumés, soit sous la forme de cristaux microscopiques d'aspect translucide.

Constituant 12 % (en masse) de la lithosphère, le quartz est le minéral le plus commun (l'oxygène et le silicium sont respectivement les premier et deuxième constituants, par ordre d'importance, de la lithosphère) ; c'est un composant important du granite, dont il remplit les espaces résiduels, et des roches métamorphiques granitiques (gneiss, quartzite) et sédimentaires (sable, grès).

Quartz is a mineral species of the group of silicates, subgroup of tectosilicates, composed of silicon dioxide of formula SiO2 (silica), with traces of different elements such as Al, Li, B, Fe, Mg, Ca, Ti , Rb, Na, OH.

It is either in the form of large colorless crystals, colored or smoked, or in the form of microscopic crystals of translucent appearance.

Constituting 12% (by mass) of the lithosphere, quartz is the most common mineral (oxygen and silicon are respectively the first and second constituents, in order of importance, of the lithosphere); it is an important component of the granite, of which it fills the residual spaces, and metamorphic rocks granitic (gneiss, quartzite) and sedimentary (sand, sandstone).

Actuellement, le quartz naturel, qui se trouve partout dans le monde (les principaux gisements se trouvent au Brésil) n'est plus guère exploité que pour servir de germe dans le processus de fabrication de quartz synthétique, cette synthèse étant industrialisée depuis la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale

EXPLOITATION DES GISEMENTS

Dans la nature, le quartz se présente rarement sous la forme de monocristaux de qualité suffisante pour l'industrie, qui utilise ses propriétés piézoélectriques (présence de macles). Les cristaux peuvent également comporter des inclusions, liquides, gazeuses — quartz aérohydres — ou solides, par exemple d'amphibole, de hornblende ou de rutile.

Le quartz est utilisé dans de nombreux domaines :

    * la réalisation de sols industriels (anti-usure) ;
    * l'épuration des eaux ;
    * le sablage industriel ;
    * matériau de décoration (parcs, allées, parkings…) ;
    * aménagement de terrains de golf (bunkers) ;
    * horlogerie ;
    * joaillerie.





EXPLOITATION OF DEPOSITS

In nature, quartz is rarely in the form of single crystals of sufficient quality for industry, which uses its piezoelectric properties (presence of twins). The crystals may also include inclusions, liquid, gaseous - aerohydrous quartz - or solid, for example amphibole, hornblende or rutile.

Quartz is used in many areas:

    * the realization of industrial floors (anti-wear);
    * water purification;
    * industrial sandblasting;
    * decoration material (parks, driveways, car parks ...);
    * development of golf courses (bunkers);
    * watchmaking;
    * jewelery.




Il s'agit d'une earth-cache: il n'y a donc pas de boîtes à chercher, mais deux questions:

1) Citez la roche locale qui en contient beaucoup.

2) Citez cinq matériaux dont un des composants est le quartz.

3) Sur place, essayez de rayer le filon avec du métal, du verre; est-ce possible? Evaluez la dureté du quartz sur l'échelle de Mohs.

4) Sur place:  le quartz est-il massif ou en placage?
                     le quartz est-il blanc, brillant ou mat?
                     est-il pur ou associé à d'autres minéraux: feldspath?
                     Y a t'il des cristaux bien formés?

This is an earth-cache: so there are no search boxes, but two questions:

1) Name the local rock that contains a lot.

2) Cite five materials of which one of the components is quartz.

3) On the spot, try to scratch the vein with metal, glass; is it possible? Evaluate the hardness of quartz on the Mohs scale.
4) On site: is the quartz solid or in veneer?
                      is the quartz white, shiny or matte?
                      is it pure or associated with other minerals: feldspar?
                      Are there well-formed crystals?
