L’île Saint-Louis est une île située sur le fleuve de la Seine, en plein cœur de Paris, dans le 4e arrondissement, juste en amont de l’île de la Cité. L’île Saint-Louis comptait une population de 2 426 habitants au 1er janvier 20131. Les habitants de l’île Saint-Louis sont les Ludovisiens ou les Ludoviciens.
L’île Saint-Louis est, avec l’île de la Cité, l’une des deux îles naturelles de la Seine subsistant encore de nos jours à Paris (l’actuelle île aux Cygnes est entièrement artificielle). Située immédiatement en amont de l’île de la Cité, elle est la plus petite des deux avec une superficie de 11 ha. Elle prend la forme d’un parallélogramme de 525 m sur son grand côté et de 250 m sur son petit côté, orienté dans une direction générale vers le nord-ouest. Sa plus grande diagonale, entre la pointe nord-ouest (place Louis-Aragon) et la pointe sud-est (square Barye), atteint un peu plus de 700 m.
The Île Saint-Louis is one of two natural islands in the Seine river, in Paris, France.The island is located within the 4th arrondissement of Paris and has a population of 4,453.One of France's first examples of urban planning, it was mapped and built from end to end during the 17th-century reigns of Henri IV and Louis XIII. A peaceful oasis of calm in the busy Paris centre, this island has only narrow one-way streets, the métro station of Sully-Morland, and two bus stops. Most of the island is residential, but there are several restaurants, hotels, shops, cafés and ice cream parlours at street level, as well as one large church. Artists and intellectuals abound within its perimeters.
The Île Saint-Louis, an elegant neighborhood, was actually two natural islets in the Seine River – the Île Notre Dame (which was the larger of the two) and the Île aux Vaches (a small islet used as a cow pasture) – joined together in 1614. The Île Saint-Louis is named after Louis IX (Saint Louis), King of France from 8 November 1226 to 25 August 1270.
