We have Motorway Mayhem. We have A-Road Anarchy (cos there aren’t many Motorways in Wales!). But what about public transport users? SideTracked Caches are intended to provide quick Cache-and-dashes at railway stations.
To follow on from the series of SideTracked caches up the Birmingham Cross-City Line, this cache has been placed at the site of the former station at Alrewas. The station was opened in 1849 on what was then the South Staffordshire Railway from Burton-on-Trent to Stourbridge via Lichfield and Dudley. Most of this line was closed to passengers during the Beeching Axe era in 1965, though this part of the line is still open to traffic for freight and empty stock working, as well as occasional diversions from the north-east to Birmingham.
The signal box is still used to control the crossing, though the road itself is now a dead-end, the main road having been diverted via the nearby bridge.
There have been proposals to re-open the line to passenger traffic, with a shuttle service running between Lichfield and Burton or Derby. A new station may be built at the site for visitors to the nearby National Memorial Arboretum.
