Julia Hutchins Farwell was born in 1855. An only child, she grew up {here} in Wells River {Vermont}. She is listed in the town history as one of 43 Newbury natives to graduate from college in the late 1800s, and only three of them were female. She graduated from Mt. Holyoke Seminary and worked for four years in a parochial school on Long Island, but resigned this position to study in Germany. When Julia returned to the United States, she studied for a year at Radcliffe before transferring and graduating from Barnard College. One year later she received an MA from Columbia College. For the next 23 years she taught at Miss Mason’s School for Girls, also known as The Castle School. The lure of spending summers in Vermont must have been strong for Julia; she ran her camp {in West Newbury VT} for 29 years. When she sold it in 1918, it was with the stipulation it continue to be called Camp Farwell, which remains today.
Julia’s life is well summed up in her obituary in The Tarrytown Daily News in 1925. It reads in part: “Miss Farwell’s greatest contribution to her country was the founding of the first girls’ camp in New England, or in fact, in the United States. The idea was quickly adopted by many, until the movement became nation-wide and New England became a great national camp center. {From Vermont Magazine, Mar. 2016, story by Polly Tafrate}
Local historian Hod Symes relates there is more to the story. Miss Farwell's dream was to create a girl's school like the Castle in Tarrytown NY here in her own hometown. Plans were preserved, which provided for a large campus within the Village of Wells River. While this was not achieved, Camp Farwell continues, now accepting reservations for its 130th year in 2019.
