About Albany Train Station(s)
The Oregon and California Railroad arrived in Albany in 1870. This helped Albany grow. The O&C was later absorbed by the Southern Pacific Railroad. The SP built a new station (the current one) in 1909. For the SP, it is not a very common SP design being of stone masonry. The station was renovated in 2004.
The Southern Pacific is gone, but Union Pacific; Portland & Western; and Albany & Eastern freights still serve the area. Passenger service is all done by Amtrak. One can still board trains here for San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland and Seattle. The Coast Starlight and the Cascades train stop here daily.
The nearby former Railway Express Building was also built by the Southern Pacific was renovated as offices for the Albany Transit system several years ago.
