THE BRIEF STORY OF FOROS DO GALEADO
In the seventeenth century, on the outskirts of Vila Nova de Milfontes there were fences, fields and swamps, a network of small farms. These we’re called coutos and were municipal and served for grazing the animals of the residents. The fences were fenced grounds and to avoid the greed of animals and people, they were exploited for an annual rent to the owners. There were several estates, of which the Galeado. In some of these estates they established “FOROS”, which allowed the tenant to explore the land in perpetuity.
Later the “FOROS” are definitely extinct, but the tenant figure persists. In the 1970s there was an outbreak of clandestine constructions without rules.
Meetings were held with tenants and residents, but still increased the construction of clandestine housing and the local real estate black market. The town has grown, welcoming several hundred habitants and has recently been installed a network of drinkable water and some of its roads have been paved in a clear sign that finally the habitants of Foros do Galeado will see their locality urbanized and legalized.
