Pare em Álvaro Traditional Geocache

A Rede das Aldeias do Xisto é um projeto de desenvolvimento sustentável, de âmbito regional, liderado pela ADXTUR- Agência para o Desenvolvimento Turístico das Aldeias do Xisto, em parceria com 21 Municípios da Região Centro e com cerca de 100 operadores privados que atuam no território.

Estado presentes em quatro Unidades de Paisagem (Serra da Lousã, Serra do Açor, Zêzere e Tejo-Ocreza), as Aldeias do Xisto representam um belíssimo património cultural e natural. Com vastas possibilidades que vão desde a gastronomia à etnografia, das ruralidades e da ligação à natureza e à floresta, as Aldeias do Xisto têm enorme potencial turístico e não só.

O projeto Geocaching Aldeias do Xisto propõe aumentar a oferta de pontos de interesse associados a esta prática da caça ao tesouro do sec. XXI. Pretende dotar cada aldeia com pelo menos duas caches e integrar algumas já existentes em circuitos e percursos pedestres.

The Schist Villages area is a region of Portugal’s interior that has successfully been promoted to tourists. The brand is managed by the ADXTUR association, the Agency for the Touristic Development of the Schist Villages, and brings together 21 Municipalities of the central region of Portugal, and more than 100 private local operations, which all share the common strategy of promoting and revitalising an area where schist stone dominates the landscape.

Present in four Landscape Units (Serra da Lousã, Serra do Açor, Zêzere and Tejo-Ocreza), the Schist Villages represent a beautiful cultural and natural heritage. With vast possibilities ranging from gastronomy to ethnography, rurality and the connection to nature and to the forest, the Schist Villages have enormous touristic potential, among others.

The Geocaching Schist Villages Project proposes to increase the offer of points of interest associated with this practice treasure hunting of the XXI century. It intends to equip each village with at least two caches and integrate some already existent in circuits and pedestrian routes.

Rica em património religioso, a aldeia de Álvaro foi outrora uma importante povoação para as ordens religiosas, nomeadamente a Ordem de Malta, que deixou inúmeros testemunhos da sua presença.

A esmagadora maioria das fachadas dos edifícios está rebocada e pintada de branco, alguns com molduras dos vãos e limites de fachada pintados com cores garridas. Os antigos muros, nunca rebocados, evidenciam a técnica construtiva.

Álvaro encontra-se no ponto em que a vertente noroeste da Serra de Alveolos termina no acidente geomorfológico denominado "fosso do Zêzere", junto à margem do qual se encontra implantada. Verdadeiro promontório, outrora de muito difícil acesso, Álvaro faz contrastar o seu casario branco com o fundo verde do pinhal, estendendo-se pela linha de cumeada ao longo da crista que se ergue sobre o Rio Zêzere. Sob duas pontes de pedra, uma das quais será provavelmente romana, passa a Ribeira de Alvelos ou Rio d’Álvaro, que abraça a margem esquerda do Zêzere.

Rich in religious heritage, Álvaro was once an important settlement for the religious orders, namely the Order of Malta, which left behind many testaments to its presence.

The great majority of the building facades have been rendered and painted white, some having garishly coloured door and window openings. The ancient walls, which were never rendered, clearly demonstrate the building technique.

Álvaro lies at the point where the north-east slope of the Serra de Alveolos mountain range terminates in the geomorphological accident called the "Fosso do Zêzere" (Zêzere Gorge), being established right on the brink of the gorge. Álvaro is a true promontory which was very difficult to access in former times. Its white houses make a sharp contrast with the green backdrop of pine forest, as it straddles the ridge along the crest rising over the River Zêzere. Under two stone bridges, one of them probably Roman, the Ribeira de Alvelos or River d’Álvaro passes, embracing the left bank of the Zêzere.
