George l Andrews
George was born in December 1894 in Ravenstone. On leaving school he became a miner at the nearby Ibstock Colliery. George enlisted at Coalville in mid - August 1914 into the 5th (1/5th) Leicestershire Battalion. With the other 49 recruits he spent nearly two months under canvas on the High Tor of Charnwood Forest, also training at the Drill Hall in Loughborough and the institute at nearby Thringstone.
In early 1915 he embarked for France from Coalville station. George was to spend nearly five months on the Western front, as a private soldier in 'B' Company, being killed instantly on the 23rd July 1915, aged 20. The Germans had detonated a mine under his frontline trench.
