What: Paddle event
Where: Lake Decatur south edge of basin 5
When: 9:00-9:30 am Saturday, August 25, 2018
We always enjoy a great day of paddling around the lake, and what better way to make it more fun than to do it with fellow geocachers?! We will meet at the posted coordinates at 9:00am, so please be sure to give yourself time to get there from wherever you choose to launch your boat. We have marked a waypoint for the Faries Park boat launch, which is the closest public launch. As this is a 5 terrain event, you must be at or near the posted coordinates between 9:00am and 9:30am to log this event. At 9:30am, the event will officially conclude and if you choose, you can paddle around basins 4, 5 and 6 and find the paddle cache series we have hidden.
If you do not own your own canoe or kayak, kayaks can be rented from Standing Paddle Co. located near The Beach House. However, this location is about 3 miles south of the event.
Although the state of Illinois no longer requires a water usage stamp, Lake Decatur does require either an annual sticker or day pass. These can be obtained from the Lake Patrol Office located at 1001 S. Lake Front Rd., Decatur, IL 62521. When we called, we were told that someone is there from 7:30am until midnight even on Saturdays. You can also go in ahead of time and get a day pass dated for this date. If you need more information regarding this, please call the Lake Patrol Office at 217-424-3827. You will need to show your paddle, life vest and a whistle in order to obtain your permit, so be sure to bring these things with you to the Lake Patrol Office.
In the event of inclement weather, the event will need to be cancelled and rescheduled for another day. Please check this page for updates and be sure to post your "Will Attend" so you will be notified of any updates that we post.
If you will be in town the night before this event, Friday, August 24, 2018, be sure to join us for Ice Cream in the Park VII, GC7RTCP.
