Geocache Description:

There's no denying your love of kayaking the waterways of Michigan, but how does that love stand up to long distance and camping? Now's your chance to prove your endurance and skills utilizing a floating mode of transportation across a 2-day, ~24 mile trek. This isn't for the casual yakker, you'll be packing everything you need with you.
Read through the details below and, if you have what it takes, join us for the 5th annual Kayak Trek event. This year's river: The Au Sable.

Time & Locations
  • Technically, all are welcome to join us for the "official event time of 2pm for 1/2 hour at the posted coords. However, in the spirit of the event, it's all about the 2-day, overnight outing on the water. Please participate. If you wish to join us for only one day or the other, feel free.

  • Estimated Timeline:
    DAY 1
    (Saturday 8/18):
10am - Meet at Launch to drop kayaks and stage vehicles
12pm - Launch (or sooner if everyone is ready)
    2pm - Event
4pm- Set up camp, eat, and relax
    DAY 2 (Sunday 8/19):
7am - Wake, eat and load up
    9am - Launch
    4pm - Extraction
6pm - Our "annual dinner" at some dive

  • Waypoints have been added for Launch, Camping, and Extraction. Check out the map below for a preview of the route.

Camping
  • Camp sites are first come, first served. We plan to stay at White Pine Campground. Our back up is Rainbow Bend Forest Campground a few miles downriver. Anyone wishing to join us for the night is welcome. Attending the event is limited to those who join us on the water, though.

  • There is no fee or registration required for camping.

  • This is an open area site designated for river access only. It is a rustic campground including vault toilets and potable water from well hand pump. Come prepared.

What to Expect
  • B.Y.O.Boat. We will not be going through a rental outfitter for this trip. If you don't own a kayak and want to rent, please do. Just make those arrangements yourself. Also, there are usually some who are willing to loan their 'yaks for use.

  • PACK ACCORDINGLY We go rain or shine and camp overnight. You will get wet, hurt, eaten by bugs, etc. Everything you take should be packed along in your kayak. There is a typical gear checklist available in the files section of the Facebook group page if you need one.

  • BRING YOUR OWN FOOD Eat well before Launch and bring food to eat en route. We should get to the campsite with plenty of time to set up and prepare dinner. You'll need lunches that you can eat on the water and breakfast for the morning. Seal everything up dry and have some way to pack out any trash. AND BRING ENOUGH WATER MORE WATER THAN YOU THINK YOU NEED!

  • TRANSPORTATION You are responsible for getting your kayak and vehicle to where they need to be. However, we usually team up and stage as many vehicles at the extraction as we can. The facebook group (link below) is a swell place to talk options with those attending.
