Geocache Description:

Brompton is about one and a half miles from Northallerton. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book and originally was Brompton in Allertonshire to differentiate it from other Bromptons in the North Riding of Yorkshire. Linen weaving was the main industry of the village, first with hand-loom weavers, when over 300 people were involved. Machinery and factories concentrated the industry in two factories which operated until after the Second World War. There is effectively no industry in the village today.

The War Memorial for Brompton is at St. Thomas' Church in the middle of the village, and comprises the Church Lych-Gate which is built of stone with a tiled roof supported by timber lintels on arched timber bracers. Carved into the outer lintel of the gate is the dedication;-

To the Memory of those who gave their lives in the Great War 1914 - 1919

Inside the gate as you enter from the footpath, on the left and right walls, are panels listing the names of the 34 heroes of the First World War commemorated; two additional panels on the left wall list the names of 9 heroes of the Second World War also commemorated here.

The co-ordinates bring you to the front of the Lych-Gate and by stepping inside you can use the names of those commemorated to work out the co-ordinates for the final cache.

The cache can be found at N54° 21.PQR W001° 25.STU where

P = number of letters in the surname of the second named Lance Corporal called Thomas H
Q = number of letters in the Christian name of Private Kitching of the South Wales Borderers
R = number of letters in the surname of the first hero on the panel on your right as you face the Church
S = number of letters in the surname of Private Arthur of the Essex Regiment
T = number of letters in the Christian name of Private Corps
U = number of middle initials given for Aircraftman First Class Atkinson.
Checksum = 30
Please ensure after signing that the cache is returned as you find it and, as always, give appropriate respect to the memorial, its surrounds and all else that you pass on your short walk to the final.
