G4 (Gaithersburg Germantown Geocaching Gathering) - Beware of the Drop Bear!
On 27 June Geocaching HQ is kicking off the search for Hidden Creatures. In this G4 meeting, we will be discussing hidden creatures. Not just the ones on the official list, but those Geocaching.com forgot, like the the dreaded drop bear.
The drop bear, or Thylarctos plummetus, is native to Australia and is related to the koala. However, where the koala is slow, docile, and cuddly herbivore, the drop bear is a carnivorous and vicious little beast well known for dropping out of trees on unsuspecting tourists. Why tourists you might ask? Well, the drop bear finds the smell of vegemite quite obnoxious, and so most Australian natives are off-putting to the drop bear unless they are very hungry. However, tourists lack the vegemite odor and thus are in much more danger. What, you thought Australians eat vegemite because they like the taste?
