Geocache Description:

Chatterton Village

About Village Sign Caches

This cache belongs to the Village Sign Series, a series of caches based on ornate signs that depict the heritage, history and culture of the villages that put them up (generally on the village green!).

The signs can be made of different materials from fibreglass to wood, from forged steel to stone. They can depict anything from local industry to historical events. The tradition probably started in Norfolk or Suffolk and has now spread across most of the country so we thought we would base a series on them!

More information and statistics can be found at the Village Signs Website

Chatterton Village

Until the 1860s, Bromley Common consisted mainly of farmland and the estates of a few large landowners. Chatterton Village grew up on the grounds of Bromley Villa (later renamed Walpole Lodge), a large house owned by gentryman landowner Henry Hebbert. He died in 1864 and Bromley Villa was auctioned, allowing the development of the area now known as Chatterton Village. Development of the area happened largely between 1864 and 1914. The area was originally named Shooting Common, but was changed to Chatterton after the 18th-century poet, Thomas Chatterton.

The Village Sign has three main elements, a feather (quill) to represent Thomas Chatterton, St Luke's Church and a Victorian school.

The Cache

The cache, a nano tube, is located a short walk from the sign. There is a road sign on the corner by the Village Sign on which each element is labelled with a letter and 4 digit number. You need to find the one on the lamp which is L ABCD. The cache can be found at:

N51 23. D (D+A) (D-A) E0 02. (C+C) (A+B) C

If anybody would like to expand the Village Sign Series, please do. I would ask that you request a number for your cache first at www.villagesignseries.co.uk so we can keep track of the Village Sign numbers and names to avoid duplication.
