Geocache Description:

You are looking for a regular sized container at Staatsburgh Historic Site. The photographs in the cache are to remain in the cache – do not take.

All members of the Mills family had contact with horses, but Gladys Mills Phipps, daughter of Ruth and Ogden Mills, was the most connected to horses, especially with horseracing.  Mrs. Phipps and her brother, Ogden Livingston Mills, owned Wheatley Stable – a nom de course under which their Thoroughbreds were registered.  Mrs. Phipps owned Bold Ruler, who won the 1957 Preakness Stakes.  In 1933, Wheatley Stable also famously bred Seabiscuit, but sold him early in his three-year-old career.

In 1938, amidst her career in horseracing, Mrs. Phipps donated the Staatsburgh mansion, its contents and 192 acres of land to NY as a museum for the Gilded Age.  Because of her generosity, we are able to enjoy this wonderful state park and mansion today.
