This is a NYS Parks Taconic Region Challenge cache!
A Labrador Retriever is twice the weight of a coyote, and the average fox is much smaller than the coyote. Coyotes have a distinctive narrow snout, tall pointed ears, and a black-tipped bushy tail.
Coyotes are an essential omnivore of our forest ecosystem and should be admired by all. They are very social animals, usually weighing about 30 to 65 pounds. They mostly eat small mammals, including white-footed mice. These mice are one of the main carriers of Lyme disease.
Eastern coyote pups are born in early spring, and leave the den in the early summer. Coyote mothers with pups are extremely active, and may be defensive. If you see a coyote, do not panic. Wave your arms, and make loud assertive noises to deter it. Keep your dogs on a leash and in your control. Do not approach it, and calmly move away from the area. Though you likely won’t see one on your daily walk, our park is a coyote’s home.
Geocache is off Nature’s Way, which is accessible from the parking lot.
Dogs are allowed on leash.
There is a $6 daily parking fee, unless you have a New York State Empire Pass, A Golden Park Pass, or a Group/Individual Access Pass.
