Geocache Description:

f1

h

Meaning: The disturbance of sedimentary deposits by living organisms

Definition: Bioturbation is defined as the reworking of soils and sediments by animals or plants. These include burrowing, ingestion and defecation of sediment grains. Bioturbating activities have a profound effect on the environment and are thought to be a primary driver of biodiversity. The formal study of bioturbation began in the 1800s by Charles Darwin experimenting in his garden. The disruption of aquatic sediments and terrestrial soils through bioturbating activities provides significant ecosystem services. These include the alteration of nutrients in aquatic sediment and overlying water, shelter to other species in the form of burrows in terrestrial and water ecosystems, and soil production on land.

To claim your found in this EC:

Sit on the bench. Look back at the layer of limestone that is more orange and also more weathered. Answer the following questions:

  1. Is there clear evidence of bioturbation?
  2. In what form is the bioturbation in (if there is any) - for example: tubes, lines, blobs, etc.
  3. Choose one: a) If the form is tubular, then what is the average length of these "tubes"? b) If the form is circular, what is the diameter of these circles? c) There is nothing to be seen here.

Don't forget to send me the answers via e-mail through my profile page or through the Geocaching message service. If your answers are good, good for you. If they are  wrong, I will get back to you.

Note: No spoiler photos in the logs. Those will simply be deleted.

Senta-te no banco.

aThe most exciting way to learn about the Earth and its processes is to get into the outdoors and experience it first-hand. Visiting an Earthcache is a great outdoor activity the whole family can enjoy. An Earthcache is a special place that people can visit to learn about a unique geoscience feature or aspect of our Earth. Earthcaches include a set of educational notes and the details about where to find the location (latitude and longitude). Visitors to Earthcaches can see how our planet has been shaped by geological processes, how we manage the resources and how scientists gather evidence to learn about the Earth.
