🇺🇸 New Sarcophagus 🏗️
Now the New Safe Confinement (NSC) is located at the site of the accident covering completely the old Sarcophagus or the Shelter. The object has arch-shaped structure with a span of 257 m, 110 m high and 165 m long. It was constructed in few hundreds meters from its current position and the 36 thousands tone weight of the NSC makes it the heaviest artificial structure which was relocated by humans. The old Sarcophagus was made of concrete and steel for 206 days, covering the remnants of the destroyed reactor, when ionizing radiation levels were too high. It was an unstable construction which was not isolated from the environment and threatening surroundings with its highly radioactive waste remained after the accident. That’s why one of the purposes of the NSC is to protect the area around the accident site from new contamination in case of the old Shelter collapse and to transform it into an environmentally safe system. Inside, there will also be placed remote control cranes which are supposed to start dismantling the unstable parts of the old shelter object. Not only sizes of the NSC are giant, its price is huge too. More then two billions EUR were spent for the object construction.

Тепер новий безпечний конфайнмент (НБК) знаходиться на місці аварії і повністю покриває старий саркофаг. Об'єкт являє собою аркові конструкції, з прольотами у 257 м, 110 м заввишки та 165 м завдовжки. Його збудували в декількох сотнях метрів від свого нинішнього положення. 36 тисяч тон споруди НБК потім було переміщено людьми. Старий саркофаг було зроблено з бетону та сталі протягом 206 днів. Він охоплював залишки зруйнованого реактора, де рівень іонізуючого випромінювання був зависоким. Це була нестабільна конструкція, яка не була ізольована від навколишнього середовища та становила загрозу навколишньому середовищу великою кількістю радіоактивних відходів, які залишились там після аварії. Саме тому, однією з цілей НБК є захист зони навколо місця аварії від нового забруднення, яке може статися у наслідок падіння старого об’єкту укриття, та перетворення його в екологічно безпечну систему. Всередині також розміщуватимуться крани, які будуть демонтувати нестабільні частини старого саркофагу. НБК вражає не лише розмірами, але й ціною. Більше двох мільярдів євро було витрачено на об'єкт будівництва.
