Experience this EarthCache

Welcome to one of the most scenic locations in Cincinnati – Price Hill. Here, we’d like to introduce you to two of the major river valleys of Cincinnati: the Ohio River and Mill Creek. Looking over the valley, you are facing due east with a great view of the Ohio River to the south, and the Mill Creek Valley to the north. Just in front of you is Downtown Cincinnati.

The Ohio River’s route has changed dramatically over the years. It started out as the Teays River, which was fed by tributaries in West Virginia and Kentucky, and flowed across Ohio and Indiana (Figure 1). As you can see in Figure 1, the modern Mill Creek Valley was also an important part of this ancient river system and was occupied by a large tributary of the Teays River (which flowed south to north). Over the last four ice age advances, the Teays River was forced further and further south by an impinging ice sheet and associated meltwater. Eventually, it migrated to its present position, called the Deep Stage Ohio.

Now, look up and examine your surroundings. Locate Mill Creek, which crosses left to right in front of you, now draining into the Ohio River. With your knowledge that Cincinnati has been heavily influenced by rivers over the years, answer the following questions.

DISCLAIMER: This area is VERY busy on weekend afternoons and evenings. We recommend avoiding this area during this time, because parking can be a nightmare. There is a parking garage across the street from the site, and street parking in the area. It can get pretty congested though during these times. Plan wisely!
