THE SERIES
The typographical expression of emotions have been around for a very long time. The first evidence of this is a clay pot that was unearthed on the border between Turkey and Syria. It has a primitive emoji painted on the pot... a curved line for a smiling mouth, and two dots for the eyes - a smiling face decoration on the pot. The astonishing part is this : the clay pot dates back nearly 4,000 years to around 1700 BC!
Chronologically, here are some other dates of significance where smileys were discovered :
1741 : the first use of an emoji in text where Bernard Hennet drew a smiley in his signature
1900 : poet Johannes V Jensen wrote a letter and included a happy face and a sad face
1919 : a very detailed smiley was used as a sticker on customers' receipts
1953 : smileys are used on movie posters as promotion
But thereafter, the smiley got a makeover when the smiley as we know it today was finally registered in 1963 by Harvey Ball as a promotion for a client. It was used on 50,000,000 buttons and was an instant worldwide hit. Since then there have been a monumental rise in the use of, and additions to, the basic Smiley
EMOTICONS
With the advent of the personal computer, people used plain text characters to express their emotions, and across the available alphabet characters, there are literally tens of thousands of these emoticons. With the development of graphic art as a medium, these emoticons became pictures and the name changed to emojis. Much easier to click on a pic of a snake than having to type out ~>°)~~~~~~ for sure. Yes - the first emoticons were viewed at right angles to the horizontal, but there are also those viewed normally. Then there are one-liners, two, three, four and more liners!
