The Cooke and Wheatstone 5-needle telegraph was an early electrical telegraph system invented in the 1830s by English inventor William Fothergill Cooke and English scientist Charles Wheatstone. It was the first telegraph system to be put into commercial service. It was popular among early users who were unwilling to learn codes, and employers who did not want to invest in staff training.
I saw one of these on display in the National Museum of Scotland. It was not operational, but it took me only a moment to realize how it worked. I thought it was a brilliantly elegant design. I also thought it would make a good puzzle cache.
If only I could figure out a way to get the darn thing working.
