Dear traveler and geocacher, when I was like you visiting this amazing place by the Dead sea, I discovered a Canyon, a hidden oasis in a middle of desert. Therefore, I have decided to share the place with you as well. Iโm sure that you will love it!ย
Before you enter the canyon, I would like to recommend being aware of water, there is a flood danger during and after the rain. So, please, if you see clouds or if it is raining, do not enter. Take good hiking shoes, enough of water, some small snack, eventually. If itโs sunny, do not forget to take a hat and a sun cream. There is a small pool at the end of a canyon, you can have a bath there.
There are two options:
1. You can enter the canyon, go to the end, go back, or
2. you can make a loop. It requires a little bit of climbing, but everyone can manage it. You just continue further up at the end of a canyon, there are stunning views on Dead sea and Ein Bokek area. Note, there is no shade, only a desert and stones. Anyway, I would strongly recommend the loop, you will see much more.
During ancient times, the land of Israel was situated on the northeast of ancient Pangea continent, washed by the Tethys sea. The area was thus periodically inundated. When there was a sea, a typical sea sediment was appearing there. It could have been a limestone, sedimented from dissolving sea shells.
Limestone is a sedimentary rock, composed mainly of skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral, forams and molluscs. Its major materials are the minerals calcite and aragonite, which are different crystal forms of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). About 10% of sedimentary rocks are limestones. The solubility of limestone in water and weak acid solutions leads to karst landscapes, in which water erodes the limestone over thousands to millions of years. Most cave systems are through limestone bedrock. There can be nodules of flint (chert) present in a limestone.
Besides limestone, it could be a sand, later compacted in a sandstone, Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand-size mineral or rock grains. Most sandstone is composed of quartz and/or feldspar, because these are the most common minerals in the Earth's crust. Like sand, sandstone may be any color, but the most common colors are tan, brown, yellow, red, gray, and white.
Or, there could have just been clastic sediments, later compacted in a clastic rock. The small or large stones can be limestones, sand stones, or others. The area of the Dead sea was covered by the sea even in Quaternary, in Holocene (aragonites are proving such a fact, if interested, see a paper by Yechieli et al., 1993). Therefore, the sediments are not covered by nothing else and are nicely visible.
For ability to log the earthcache, please send me answers to the following questions. You can send the answers in English, Czech, Slovak or French, if itโs easier for you. Then, you can log immediately.
1. While walking through the canyon, find a nice geological profile with visible layers of sediments. You can choose whichever you like. Describe it and try to explain, in your opinion, why the character of the layers as well as the grain size is changing. Remember the rule: lowest layers are the oldest ๐ You can try to estimate distance from the shore, where you think the โbottom of the seaโ (the area you are looking at) was situated in the past. A chart in listing can help you. Was there a breaker, or was the sea calm? Estimate it for each of the layers. If you want to, you can draw a simple labeled picture of the layers if itโs easier for you.
2. In some of the layers you will find small mostly rounded stones. They look opaque (glassy or waxy appearance) and can have a brown, grey or greenish color. What do you think is a name of a mineral? (not mandatory, optional: what is a chemical composition and origin of the mineral?)
3. On the given coordinates, look up. Can you see any specific structures? In your own words, how were they created?
4.There is a large stone at the end and right in a middle of a canyon at the earthcache coordinates. Can you estimate its height?
(5. Optional Take a picture anywhere in canyon of yourself or a GPS device. All other pictures are more than welcome, I am curious about how the canyon is changing through the seasons and years).
Thanks! I hope you will enjoy your trip, Iโm looking forward to your answers ๐ Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
