Today is the ” Ides of March ”!

Many of us have heard of the “Ides of March’ but I for one had no idea what that actually was or means. What is the significance? Although March (Martius) was the third month of the Julian calendar, in the oldest Roman calendar it was the first month of the year and the Ides of March is a day on the Roman calendar that corresponds to March 15. It was marked by several religious observances and was notable for the Romans as a deadline for settling debts.
Of course in modern times, the Ides of March is best known as the date on which Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC. Caesar was stabbed to death at a meeting of the Senate. As many as 60 conspirators, led by Brutus and Cassius, were involved. According to Plutarch, a seer had warned that harm would come to Caesar no later than the Ides of March. On his way to the Theatre of Pompey, where he would be assassinated, Caesar passed the seer and joked, "The Ides of March are come", implying that the prophecy had not been fulfilled, to which the seer replied "Aye, Caesar; but not gone." I guess someone had quite a debt to settle!

But maybe we all should be concerned about the Ides of March.

- Samoan Cyclone, 1889 - A cyclone wrecks six warships—three U.S., three German—in the harbor at Apia, Samoa, leaving more than 200 sailors dead. (On the other hand, the ships represented each nation’s show of force in a competition to see who would annex the Samoan islands; the disaster averted a likely war.)
- A Deadly Blizzard on the Great Plains, 1941 - A Saturday-night blizzard strikes the northern Great Plains, leaving at least 60 people dead in North Dakota and Minnesota and six more in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. A light evening snow did not deter people from going out—“after all, Saturday night was the time for socializing,” Diane Boit of Hendrum, Minnesota, would recall—but “suddenly the wind switched, and a rumbling sound could be heard as 60 mile-an-hour winds swept down out of the north.”

- Disappearing Ozone Layer, 1988 - NASA reports that the ozone layer over the Northern Hemisphere has been depleted three times faster than predicted.
- A New Global Health Scare, 2003 - After accumulating reports of a mysterious respiratory disease afflicting patients and healthcare workers in China, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore and Canada, the World Health Organization issues a heightened global health alert. The disease will soon become famous under the acronym SARS (for Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome).

Thursday, March 15, 2018 from 6:30am - 7:30am. (Oh yes, AM, in the morning, bright and early, rise and shine sleepy head). You may stay longer if you'd like, that depends on what time you have to show up for work or be somewhere else.

We will be meeting for a good, hearty breakfast at Cracker Barrel, just South of I-94.

Everyone is welcome at the event!

Bring a good, hearty appetite and be ready to share some of the best memories you have of geocaching; including, but not limited to, best caches, best events, best hospital story, best encounter with local law enforcement authorities, etc.

What do I do AFTER the event?
If you don't have to go to work or be somewhere else, we suggest you get out and cache!!! Either alone or with one of the groups that will, undoubtedly, be formed before, during or after the event. A great geocaching day can start here and then head south to 3bteams copycat breakfast event.
