Geocache Description:

A CITO in the World Heritage landscape to celebrate World Heritage Day 2018.

We will meet at the car park just off the A4 near Beckhampton roundabout at 11.30am. There is plenty of parking here and we will begin our event by clearing up any rubbish at the parking place. Then it’s a short walk up the road to the White Horse Trail which marks the eastern boundary of the Avebury World Heritage Site and we will wander our way up to Windmill Hill clearing up any litter and debris as we go. I anticipate the event will last until 1.30pm.

Windmill Hill causewayed enclosure is an early Neolithic enclosure, with its three concentric circuits of interrupted ditches, is one of the largest such monuments in England. The site was built in about 3650BC and was used for over 100 years, probably as a meeting place for people from the surrounding region. Excavations have revealed animal bones, pottery and flint tools, showing that feasting, exchange and perhaps other ceremonies took place here. The site was revisited in the late Neolithic and Early Bronze Ag, when further deposits were made and round barrows were built in and around the enclosure.

Bring a flask of tea, some cake and sandwiches for a mini feast at the top where the views are truly astounding. Along our clean up walk we will pass GC2N40K 'Barking Up the Wrong Tree?' by geo-g5 and pass close to GC3Z2W4 ‘Indigo's Secret’ by collieflying and GC4453 Windmill Hill (Wilts) by The Wombles. And there might just be a new cache published to mark the occasion too

The CITO is being organised by the World Heritage Site Co-ordination Unit in partnership with the National Trust.
