Geocache Description:

Number 1043 in a series of caches where a red telephone box is in close proximity to a post box.

The only rules are that they have to be able to be photographed together, be not more than 100’ apart and the phone boxes have to be red.

A 'fun' fact about Brixham to entertain you whilst you're there.

The very first reference to Brixham was in the Domesday book. It appeared as Briseham. From the Middle Ages this town was vitally important in the fishing industry not just locally, but of the nation. It was the biggest fishing port in the South-West and at one point it was the biggest in England. Its boats and captains capitalised on this success and helped establish fishing ports such Lowestoft, Hull and Grimsby – now famous fishing spots in their own right. Brixham eventually became known as the “Mother of All Deep-Sea Fisheries.”
On January 10th, 1866, catastrophe fell. A huge storm blew up at sea with no warning and almost all of Brixham’s fleet was out fishing. It was such a severe storm that most of the boats never came back, and nearly all the fisherman died. It is said that the fisherwives gathered everything they had: clothes, furniture, bedding and went down to the harbour to set it all alight in a huge bonfire, in the hope that it would guide their menfolk home.
Sadly the fire failed to help those at sea. In the aftermath of this terrible tragedy, the worst to ever hit Brixham, the town was given what eventually became the RNLI lifeboat for Torbay. Since then, this lifeboat, its successors and those who crew them have saved hundreds of lives.

Now the town is home to 'a fine pair'. Things are looking up...
