Number 1045 in a series of caches where a red telephone box is in close proximity to a post box.
The only rules are that they have to be able to be photographed together, be not more than 100’ apart and the phone boxes have to be red.
A Fine Pair # 1045 - Farringdon
Some 'fun' facts about Farringdon to entertain you whilst you're there.
Farringdon has definitely been a place of settlement since the Neolithic times, about 5,500 B.C. However, recent flint tool finds suggest Farringdon may have been occupied as far back as 250,000 years ago during the Palaeolithic period.
There are also numerous known Roman sites in and around the village, including a Romano/British farm. A recent find of a Roman oil lamp at Denbow suggests there may well be a villa not too far away.
In addition to this, there is a known Saxon site near Upham farm and following the Norman invasion, most of the lands at Farringdon were held by the Chief bowman to William the Conqueror. There is some evidence that he made much of the area into a deer park.
The manor of Farringdon was held by the "de Farringdon" family until the late 16th century when Lancelot Farringdon, the last male heir, committed suicide in 1598. Tristram Risdon in his seminal work Survey of the County of Devon described him as "a proper and discret gentleman in outward show [who was] found hanged in his bedchamber by his garter to the bedstead."
Now the village is home to 'a fine pair'. Things are looking up...
