„Curtis, que dicitur Nordilinga“: Als „Königshof, genannt Nordilinga“ wird Nördlingen 898 in einer Urkunde zum ersten Mal erwähnt. Dabei handelt es sich nicht um einen Königssitz oder Palast, sondern um eine Zwischenstation für den „reisenden“ König und sein Gefolge.
Die geografische Lage der Stadt macht schon damals den Unterschied: Nördlingen liegt an der Kreuzung zweier großer Handelsrouten, Frankfurt - Augsburg und Nürnberg - Ulm. Hier kommt jeder vorbei - egal ob König, Kaiser oder Kaufmann. Der perfekte Platz für einen Zwischenstopp: Hier gibt es Unterkunft und Verpflegung. Und wo Kaufleute sich treffen, da wird gehandelt.
So beginnt der Aufschwung der Stadt im Mittelalter. Die „Nördlinger Pfingstmesse“ - heute noch ein großes Volksfest - wird neben Frankfurt zu einer der wichtigsten Fernhandelsmessen für Textilien, Getreide, Vieh, Pelze und Metallwaren. Mit der wirtschaftlichen Macht steigt auch die politische: 1219 wird Nördlingen „Reichsstadt“. Ab jetzt ist sie nicht mehr von einem Fürsten oder Bischof abhängig, sondern nur noch dem Kaiser direkt verpflichtet. Das bedeutet weitgehende Autonomie und Selbstverwaltung. Zu dieser Zeit wird auch mit dem Bau der Stadtmauer begonnen. Der neue Wohlstand muss schließlich geschützt werden. 1400 ist der Mauerring geschlossen.
Der 30-jährige Krieg trifft das mittlerweile protestantische Nördlingen hart. Vom 18. August bis zum 7. September 1634 widersteht die Stadtbefestigung der Belagerung durch kaiserlich-katholische Truppen. Das zur Befreiung der Stadt heranrückende 25.000 Mann starke schwedisch-protestantische Heer unterliegt in der „Schlacht bei Nördlingen“ den 50.000 kaiserlichen Soldaten (der dazugehörige Multi ist sehr empfehlenswert: GC229W0). Nördlingen kapituliert am darauffolgenden Tag. Obwohl die Stadt mit einer hohen Geldzahlung die Plünderung durch die siegreichen Truppen verhindern kann, fordert der Krieg seinen Tribut: Die Einwohnerzahl halbiert sich auf 4.500 Bewohner. Erst 1939 wohnen wieder 9.000 Personen in der Stadt. Nach dem 30-jährigen Krieg verlagert sich der Handel in Richtung der Seehäfen. Nördlingen verliert seine Bedeutung als Handelszentrum.

Heute scheint es fast so, als seien die mittelalterlichen Stadtbilder von Nördlingen, Dinkelsbühl oder Rothenburg auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer politischen und wirtschaftlichen Bedeutung eingefroren, um uns heute einen Eindruck davon zu geben, wie ihre Bewohner im Mittelalter gelebt haben.

Tauch ein in die mittelterliche Atmosphäre der Stadt: Der Multicache lädt dich zu einem knapp 3 km langen Rundgang auf der Stadtmauer von Nördlingen ein. Sie ist die einzige Stadtmauer Deutschlands mit einem vollständig erhaltenen, begehbaren und überdachten Wehrgang. Starte am Parkplatz beim Reimlinger Tor und erkenne, während du an 5 Toren und 11 Türmen vorbeikommst, an 11 Stationen die richtigen Bilder aus der Fotocollage und ordne sie dem Stationsbuchstaben (A - K) zu.

"Curtis, que dicitur Nordilinga": As a "royal court, called Nordilinga" is Nördlingen mentioned for the first time in a document from the year 898. It is no palace or royal residence, more like a stop-over place for the traveling king and his entourage.
Already at that time, the geographic situation makes the difference. Nördlingen lies at the crossing of two important trade routes: Frankfurt - Augsburg, and Nuremberg - Ulm. Whether emperor, king or merchant…everybody has to pass by here. The perfect location for a stopover: There is accommodation, food, and drinking. And where merchants meet trading takes place.
For this reason, the city becomes more and more important. The “Nördlinger Pfingstmesse” - even today still a large folk festival - evolves into one of the most important trade fairs for textiles, grain, cattle, furs and metal goods. The economic power effects a rise of political influence: In 1219 Nördlingen becomes a “Free Imperial City” and depends from now on no longer on a local lord or bishop. It is only subjected directly to the emperor. This means extensive sovereignty and self-government. At this time begins the construction of the city wall. The new prosperity has to be protected! At 1400 the wall around the city is completed.
The 30-year war hits the now protestant city quite hard. From August 18 to September 7, 1834, the city fortification resists the siege by imperial-catholic troops. For the liberation of the city approaches a Swedish-protestant army of 25.000 men. But in the “Battle of Nördlingen”, the Swedish soldiers are defeated by the imperial troops. Nördlingen capitulates the following day. Although the city can avoid the looting by paying a large sum of money to the victorious Army, the war takes its toll: The population is halved to 4.500. Far later, in 1939, the population reaches again 9.000. After the 30-year war, the trading centers increasingly relocate to the seaports. Nördlingen loses its significance as a central place of trade.

It almost seems as if the medieval cityscapes of Nördlingen, Dinkelsbühl and Rothenburg would have been frozen in time on the height of their power to give us today an impression of the life of their population at that time.

Immerse yourself in the medieval atmosphere of the city: This Multi-Cache invites you to an almost 3 km long tour on the city-wall of Nördlingen. It is the only city wall with a completely preserved, walkable and roofed wall-walk. Start at the parking in front of the “Reimlinger Tor”. Go to waypoint A and look for the photo that corresponds to that point and note its number. You will then have the value of A. Proceed in the same way for each of the 11 waypoints (A - K) and at the end, you will be able to calculate the coordinates of the stash.
