Geocache Description:

Le tertre de Brandefer est un dôme de 80 mètres de haut étendu sur environ 1km² et
appartenant au complexe métamorphique et granitique de Saint-Malo.

Cet ensemble se distingue par la présence au
centre d’un bloc important de phtanite, une roche siliceuse très dure d’origine sédimentaire
composée de quartz en cristaux et exploitée sur le site jusque dans les années 60.
L’ancienne carrière d’exploitation est encore visible aujourd’hui au sommet du Tertre et forme un
creux d’un peu plus de 20 mètres bordé de pentes abruptes. Ce creux est occupé aujourd’hui par
un étang végétalisé dont la profondeur n’excède pas 1mètre lors des périodes de hautes eaux.
Dans ces roches dures qui constituent le tertre, l’eau est localisée principalement dans les 10 à 20
premiers mètres de la roche, là où elle est altérée et se transforme progressivement en sable et en
argile. En dessous, l’eau est présente mais elle s’écoule au sein de fractures et de petites fissures.

Phtanite

La phtanite est colorée en vert pâle par de la chlorite ou de l'épidote, Désigne une roche sédimentaire siliceuse formée par d'anciennes vases siliceuses consolidées
qui est apparue pendant la période éocène et crétacée supérieure.

The mound of Brandefer is a dome 80 meters high extended about 1km² and
belonging to the metamorphic and granite complex of Saint-Malo.

This set is distinguished by the presence
center of a large block of phtanite, a very hard siliceous rock of sedimentary origin
composed of quartz crystals and exploited on the site until the 60s.
The former quarry is still visible today at the top of the Tertre and forms a
hollow of a little more than 20 meters bordered by steep slopes. This hollow is occupied today by
a vegetated pond whose depth does not exceed 1 meter during periods of high water.
In these hard rocks that form the mound, the water is located mainly in the 10 to 20
the first meters of the rock, where it is altered and gradually transforms into sand and
clay. Below, the water is present but it flows in fractures and small cracks.

phtanite

Phthalite is colored in pale green by chlorite or epidote, denotes a siliceous sedimentary rock formed by old consolidated siliceous vases
which appeared during the Eocene and Upper Cretaceous period.
