Chipper Jones Hits Three-Run Homer in 12th to Give National League the All-Star Game Win!
In a game that went three extra innings, the Atlanta Braves’ Chipper Jones, on a three-ball count, hit a towering three-run shot high above the 333-foot marker in right field and out of the stadium to lift the NL to victory. Scoring ahead of Jones were the Phillies’ Mike Schmidt, who tripled, and the Rockies’ Nolan Arenado, who reached base by an E-3. In a back and forth slugfest, where every hit was needed to extend the game, the NL prevailed after both teams nearly emptied its bench. Proving once again that it takes the entire team's contribution to reach your goal.
After the game, Jones shrugged off his heroic accomplishment as “as easy as 1-2-3”. When asked how far he thought the ball actually traveled, Jones simply replied "I don't know". His only regret was not recovering the ball after it left the stadium. With that thought, Jones decided to offer one smiley face to every fan who can find and autograph the ball. Graig Nettles, of the New York Yankees, took no interest in the ball saying “Jones’ homer will look just like my Texas League single in the box score”.
