Today is ” Words ”!

Words - a unit of language, consisting of one or more spoken sounds or their written representation, that functions as a principal carrier of meaning. But you may rightly ask ‘Word is a word, not a celebration or an event’ and that would be true. But today is the birthday of both A.A. Milne and Peter Mark Roget and they both have celebrations for their words.
Peter Mark Roget struggled with depression for most of his life and his obsession with list-making as a coping mechanism was well established by the time he was eight years old. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and later helped found the medical school at Manchester and from 1808 to 1840 he practiced in London. In 1814 he even invented a “log-log” slide rule for calculating the roots and powers of numbers and in 1824 presented a paper on the consideration of ‘the illusion of motion as seen through the spokes of a wheel’ and is sometimes seen as important point in film history. Roget retired from active medical practice in 1840 and began work on a system of verbal classification he had begun in 1805. The first edition was published in 1852 of his eponymous tome, ‘Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases (Roget's Thesaurus), a classified collection of related words. Many, many words.
A.A. Milne was a poet and novelist on a variety of subjects, and also a playwright. But it was a couple of books he wrote using his son Christopher Robin and his toys for inspiration that earned him a place in history. The success of his children's books was to become a source of considerable annoyance to Milne, who in his own words, "said goodbye to all that in 70,000 words" (the approximate length of his four principal children's books) as he wanted to continue to write a huge variety of themes but could never shake off the notoriety and fame that came from 'Winnie the Pooh'. He published the first story in a newspaper commissioned for Christmas 1925 which was well received, and the following year released a collection of stories in a book. The popularity continued to grow. In 1930, Stephen Slesinger purchased the U.S. and Canadian merchandising, television, recording and other trade rights to the "Winnie-the-Pooh" works from Milne for a $1000 advance and 66% of Slesinger's income, creating the modern licensing industry. By November 1931, Pooh was a $50 million-a-year business. Slesinger marketed Pooh and his friends for more than 30 years, creating the first Pooh doll, record, board game, puzzle, US radio broadcast (NBC), animation, and motion picture film. After Slesinger's death in 1953, his wife, Shirley continued developing the character herself. The rights to A. A. Milne's Pooh books were left to four beneficiaries that included his family. In 1961, Milne's widow Daphne and Slesinger's wife licensed rights to Walt Disney Productions in exchange for royalties in the first of two agreements. In 2001, the other beneficiaries sold their interest in the estate to the Disney Corporation for $350m. By 2002 Forbes magazine ranked Winnie the Pooh the most valuable fictional character with merchandising products alone having annual sales of more than $5.9 billion. So today Milne’s ’70,000 words’ are worth around $86,000 per word.

Words can be surprisingly powerful. Which might why our country’s forefathers enshrined respect for them in our Constitution. Some other words to remember: ‘with great power, comes great responsibility’.

So today is both ‘Thesaurus Day’ and ‘Winnie the Pooh Day’. Just a couple of collections of words that have had a profound and lasting effect (and became far more valuable…) than their originators may have ever imagined!
