Geocache Description:

Small hands

If you have them, you'll be thankful while grabbing this cache!

Congratulations to TheByrdCache on FTF (and also for finding my lost hat)!!

Sylvan Glen Park Preserve is the site of a former 20th century quarry. The granite quarry opened up in 1895 and was abandoned in the fall of 1941 just before the United States entered into World War II.The quarry employed hundreds of workers, and its stone was used to construct the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan and the approaches to the George Washington Bridge. You can still find some of the machinery along the trails. History courtesy Jane Daniels and the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference (NYNJTC).

The cache container is a small camo lock & lock. Bring your own pen.

Please keep an eye out for poison ivy - I didn't see much of it where I hid the geocache, but there is a good deal of it in the park, so just be aware and know what it looks like before you go out. And try not to touch any vines hugging trees unless you know your vines (this could be poison ivy).

Also check for ticks within 24 hours of your hike. Ticks are carried by white footed mice and deer. Deer ticks can carry lyme disease, and Westchester has a lot of mice, deer, and deer ticks! Nymph (very small) ticks are the ones that are most likely to give you lyme, so give yourself a thorough check and you can always read more about poison ivy and lyme disease on the CDC or New York State websites.

Happy geocaching!
