- Conta-se que o nosso rei D. Pedro gostava muito de ir à caça. Um dia estava aborrecido de tudo, pois estava nos Açores, aqui em S. Miguel, por causa da guerra com seu irmão D. Miguel. Neste estado de espírito, saiu numa fúria enraivecida, de lança em punho, montado no seu cavalo branco, fogoso e bravo. Meteu-se terra dentro com intenção de se distrair a caçar. Então o diabo, que não perde a sua oportunidade e anda sempre por aí, a vaguear pela terra a combater as forças do bem, vendo D. Pedro em tal disposição, decidiu aproveitar a oportunidade. Transformou-se num belo veado, caça rara nestas ilhas. D. Pedro, ao avistar o lindo veado, disparou numa corrida desenfreada em perseguição de caça tão apetecida.
- O diabo, feito veado, foi correndo, correndo, até que levou o nosso rei para umas terras altas e muito perigosas porque tinham muitos precipícios. Sem se aperceber do perigo, o rei, montado no seu cavalo, galopava a toda a velocidade em direcção à morte certa. Mas nisto o arcanjo que deu o nome a esta ilha, S. Miguel, surgiu e segurou as rédeas do cavalo, precisamente no momento em que o animal, acicatado pelo dono, ia dar um salto no precipício. Logo D. Pedro reconheceu a tramóia que o diabo lhe tinha armado para o tentar e viu também que se não fosse a intervenção de S. Miguel em defesa da sua vida já estava morto.
- A partir de então, esse precipício, que fica para os lados de Santa Bárbara e de onde se avistam os dois lados da ilha, ficou conhecido pelo Salto do Cavalo, nome que ainda hoje se mantém a lembrar o que aconteceu ao nosso rei. Também em sinal de agradecimento, D. Pedro mandou erguer uma imponente estátua a S. Miguel, eu protector e salvador. E essa estátua que se encontra hoje em frente à Câmara Municipal de Ponta Delgada, e bem se pode ver o arcanjo a espezinhar o diabo.

Without realizing the danger, the king, mounted on his horse, galloped at full speed toward certain death. But in this the archangel who gave the name to this island, S. Miguel, emerged and held the reins of the horse, precisely at the moment when the animal, acciated by the owner, was going to jump on the cliff. Soon D. Pedro recognized the plot that the devil had armed him to try it and also saw that if it were not for the intervention of S. Miguel in defense of his life he was already dead.
- Since then, this cliff, which is to the sides of Santa Barbara and where you can see both sides of the island, was known by the Salto do Cavalo, a name that still remains to remember what happened to our king. Also in a sign of gratitude, D. Pedro had an imposing statue erected for St. Michael, my protector and savior. And this statue that stands today in front of the City Hall of Ponta Delgada, and you can see the archangel to trample the devil.
