4WDing in the High Country
Many parts of the High Country are subject to seasonal road closures – please familiarise yourself with these prior to attempting any high country caches.
Weather
Weather in the alpine area can change quickly and snow is not restricted to the winter season so ensure that you are aware of forecasts and avoid if the weather is inclement. Snowfalls, blizzards and thunderstorms can occur at any time of the year. Diamond patterned snow chains (the only legal snow chains in Alpine areas), that fit the diameter of your tyres, should be carried if there is risk of snow. Similarly the bush fire season may occur in the warmer months November to April. Never travel into a high risk bushfire area when a Code Red Fire Danger rating has been forecast. Also heed Total Fire Ban restrictions if/when in place.
Recovery Equipment
Some tracks are seldom used so you should carry appropriate recovery equipment. It is also a good idea to carry a chainsaw as there can be fallen timber across tracks particularly in areas that have suffered bushfires.
Water Crossings
Please be aware that water can be deep and fast flowing so it is important to know the limitations of your vehicle. Murky water can be an indication of prior heavy rain so the river/creek may be higher levels than usual.
Mobile Service
Mobile coverage can be intermittent at best, ensure that your travels plans are relayed to a family member/acquaintance prior to departure together with your expected return.
