Geocache Description:

Long vanished station.

A house now stands on the opposite side of the tracks where the station once stood on this site. This is still on working main line between Aberdeen and Inverness, so do take care. The cache does not require you to cross the railway line. If you do decide to cross only do so when the light is at green. Never cross when it is red even if you cannot yet see or hear a train coming.

Pitmedden station was opened in 1874 as a small stop on the line from Aberdeen to Inverness. Given it's remoteness it is difficult to see why it was built. It was probably opened as a convenience for George Thomson Provost of Aberdeen 1847-50, and M.P. for the city 1852-57. Records in 1873 the year before the station opened shows he held 1308 acres in the shire, valued at £1671 per annum.

He lived at the nearby Pitmedden House the station being opened directly opposite the bottom of his driveway.

The station closed with the Beeching cuts on the 7th December 1964.
