Geocache Description:

A FINE PAIR #1000 CHELTENHAM

Number 1000 in a series of caches where a red telephone box is in close proximity to a post box.
The only rules are that they have to be able to be photographed together, be not more than 100’ apart and the phone boxes have to be red.

Cheltenham is known for many things such as horse racing's Gold Cup and the home of GCHQ (no not that GCHQ) but the Government Communications Head Quarters as well as the world famous Cheltenham Ladies College, its frequented by celebrities and members of the royal family live nearby.

People such as Gustav Holst (Composer), Brian Jones (Rolling Stones), Edward Wilson (Explorer), Kate Thornton (X-Factor), Richard O'Brien (The Crystal Maze), and Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards (Winter Olympian) were born in the town.

What Cheltenham isn't as well known for though is its the home to 7 original 1866 Penfold letterboxes still in use an 8th was recently removed after being damaged by a lorry and a 9th was removed in the 1970's. These letterboxes are Grade II listed

In this Wherigo you will firstly visit the fantastic Fine Pair in the centre of Cheltenham, the unusual thing abut this fine pair is that its not just a red letterbox close to a red phone box its actually a red letterbox close to 10 red phone boxes.  The phone boxes have been at this location since the 1960's.

With the boom in mobile phone usage these telephone boxes fell into disrepair and according to official figures, an average of just one call every two hours was made over a 12 month period from the group of kiosks.

After the telephones were removed from the boxes they were all acquired by the local council through the adopt a kiosk scheme and have been extensively restored at a cost of £22,000 to be used by the towns art gallery and museum as mini art galleries they also house electrical hook-up points for the street markets that happen along this stretch of pedestrian area, the markets and cafe seating areas shouldn't hinder your access to the Fine Pair though but your view of them will be hindered.

ABOUT THIS WHERIGO

This Wherigo has 3 stages to it, the first being The Fine Pair, once at the location the next stage will open.

Dotted around Cheltenham is a number of rare 1866 Penfold letterboxes, this Wherigo involves you having to visit each Penfold before the final cache location is revealed.

How you visit each checkpoint is up to you, but as you will notice from the checkpoint map on the cartridge (or from prior research) some of the Penfold's are a little further outside of the town centre so you my choose to use transport to get to them or walk to them and possibly find other caches along the way, you also do not have to do them all in one go as after visiting each checkpoint, your progress is automatically saved (just make sure you reload your savegame if you restart the cartridge!).

But remember not to overwrite your savegame!!!

You can complete the checkpoints in any order you choose.

Once you have visited each Penfold the final cache location will be revealed this is within 1km of the starting location.  Please try to avoid giving the final hide location away in any pictures you wish to post as you will see when you get there it is an obvious place to find.

The Cache is roadside but it is not located on the road, please be responsible when at the final location and keep an eye on children..
