Remembrance Sunday

In the United Kingdom, Remembrance Sunday is a national holiday commemorating the contribution of military and civilian servicemen and -women in the two World Wars and later conflicts. It is held on the second Sunday in November, the Sunday nearest to 11 November, Armistice Day, the anniversary of the end of hostilities in the First World War at 11am in 1918. Across the UK and the Commonwealth, Remembrance Sunday is marked by ceremonies at local war memorials in most cities, towns and villages, attended by civic dignitaries, ex-servicemen and -women, members of local armed forces regular and reserve units, military cadet forces, and youth organisations. Wreaths of remembrance poppies are laid on the memorials and two minutes' silence is held at 11am.

Remembrance Poppy

The remembrance poppy is an artificial flower that has been used since 1921 to commemorate military personnel who have died in war, and represents a common or field poppy, Papaver rhoeas. Inspired by the World War I poem ‘In Flanders Fields’, and promoted by Moina Michael, they were first adopted by the American Legion to commemorate American soldiers killed in that war (1914–1918). They were then adopted by military veterans' groups in parts of the British Empire. Today, they are most common in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, and are used to commemorate their servicemen and women killed in all conflicts. Small artificial poppies are often worn on clothing, traditionally from All Souls' Day (2 Nov) to the latter of Remembrance Day (11 Nov) or Remembrance Sunday.

Poppy Geocoins

This establishment is always a fitting place to honor the men and women of our armed forces and emergency services and to remember those who gave their lives to preserve the freedoms we enjoy today. Since this event falls a few weeks before Remembrance Day, two poppy geocoins will be raffled off — a 1.75" silver coin and a 1" gold coin, both trackable on gc.com.
