El granito es quizás, la mejor conocida de todas las rocas ígneas . Se forma a partir de masas formidables de magma, que ascienden por la corteza terrestre porque tienen menor densidad que el material que los rodea, sufriendo un lento proceso de enfriamiento.

Un granito puede tener distintos colores, que varían de blanco a rojo y negro, dependiendo de las diferencias en la composición mineral y la consistencia. El granito se compone de tres minerales: cuarzo (transparente, blanco,gris...) feldespato ( blanco, rosa, rojo, amarillo, marrón, verde y gris) , mica y otros ..(color negro).
Algunos granos minerales miden solo milímetros y otros varios centímetros. La forma y tamaño de los minerales nos habla de las condiciones en las que se enfrió el magma. Un enfriamiento lento hace que los minerales tengan más tiempo para crecer y alcanzar mayor tamaño y viceversa.
